Shorter odds are not automatically better value — shorter-odds games pay smaller top prizes. Cost per unit of chance (price × odds) is the cleanest single comparison.
Lottery winnings are taxed at a flat 30% under Section 115BB of the Income Tax Act, plus 4% cess (effective 31.2%) and surcharge on large prizes (up to 15% for wins above ₹1 crore). TDS of 30% is deducted at source under Section 194B on winnings above ₹10,000, and no deductions or exemptions apply against this income.
