National Lottery winnings are tax-free in South Africa — prizes are exempt from income tax and capital gains tax for casual players, and Ithuba withholds nothing for SARS. Interest earned once the money is banked is taxed normally.

How long you have to claim

365 days from the draw date; unclaimed prizes return to the prize fund.
