Residents of Sodeto, Spain

Sodeto is a farming hamlet in the Monegros district of Huesca province, Aragon, with roughly 250 residents. Its Asociación de Amas de Casa sold participaciones in number 58268 door to door as an annual fundraiser, a few euros apiece. On 22 December 2011 that number was drawn as El Gordo, the first prize of the Lotería de Navidad. Reuters reported the number paid €400,000 on each €20 décimo — €720 million (about US$940 million) in total — and had been sold almost entirely around Grañén in Huesca. In Sodeto the association had reached every household but one: about 70 households collected, most of them at least €100,000, with some shares running to several hundred thousand euros. The Local put the village's combined share at €120 million; the Spanish daily El Español later reported a figure closer to €200 million spread across some 75 families. Revisits in 2016 and 2023 found no Ferraris or Lamborghinis. Residents paid off mortgages, renovated houses, and bought tractors, land and irrigation equipment, and the village's slide toward depopulation slowed.

Revisiting the village in December 2023, Euronews found the windfall had gone into homes, farms and family businesses rather than luxuries — one winner expanded his firm and hired ten workers — with individual payouts there reported from about €120,000 up to close to €1 million.
