Lotofácil — how prizes are taxed

Brazil withholds 30% income tax on lottery prizes at source (Caixa pays net).

Brazil: the rules

Federal lottery prizes such as Mega-Sena are subject to 30% income tax withheld at source on prizes above the exempt band (around R$1,900) — advertised jackpots are pre-tax and Caixa pays the net amount. The withholding is definitive, with no further income tax due on the prize.

How long you have to claim

90 days from the draw; unclaimed prizes fund federal education programs.

Regulator: Secretaria de Prêmios e Apostas, Ministério da Fazenda; lotteries operated by Caixa Econômica Federalofficial site
