Swiss Lotto — how prizes are taxed

Swiss lottery prizes up to CHF 1 million are tax-free; amounts above are subject to withholding and income tax.

Switzerland: the rules

Since 2019, winnings from Swiss lotteries and sports betting (Swisslos, Loterie Romande) are tax-free up to CHF 1 million per win. Only the portion above CHF 1 million is taxed as income, and a 35% anticipatory tax is withheld on that excess (credited against the final assessment).
