Gloria C. Mackenzie

Gloria C. Mackenzie, an 84-year-old widow living in Zephyrhills, Florida, held the only ticket matching all six numbers in the Powerball drawing of 18 May 2013, an advertised $590.5 million and then the largest jackpot ever won on a single US ticket. She had bought the quick pick at a Publix supermarket in Zephyrhills after another customer in the queue allowed her to go ahead. She came forward on 5 June 2013, accompanied by her son Scott Mackenzie of Jacksonville, whom she gave power of attorney over her finances and with whom she had agreed to split the proceeds; Scott in turn hired the Jacksonville financial planner Harry "Hank" Madden, owner of Madden Advisory Services, to manage the money, and took the one-off lump sum of $370,896,780 before tax rather than 30 annual payments of more than $19 million; after withholding she received about $278 million. A former resident of East Millinocket, Maine, she established the Gloria C. MacKenzie Foundation in 2013 and pledged about $2 million to repair the roof of Schenck High School there, with the funded work beginning in May 2014. She first sued in September 2018; that complaint was dismissed on 14 February 2019 and an amended complaint seeking damages above $10 million, naming Scott Mackenzie and Harry "Hank" Madden of Madden Advisory Services, was filed on 6 March 2019 in state court in Jacksonville, becoming public in April 2019 when she was 90 in state court in Jacksonville, alleging breach of fiduciary duty, breach of contract, negligence and exploitation of a vulnerable adult, and claiming her money had been placed in low-return CDs and money-market accounts while she was charged $2 million in fees. Scott denied wrongdoing, saying the conservative investments matched her stated objectives and preserved her wealth.

Mackenzie died on 16 February 2021 at her home in Florida, aged 92, according to her published obituary; she was born 23 December 1928 in Sherman, Maine. Her family foundation's website describes her in the past tense and says her family continues her work, and as of 2025 the Gloria C. MacKenzie Foundation was still accepting annual grant applications from Maine non-profits, opening 1 January and closing 1 March each year. No resolution of the 2019 lawsuit against her son has been publicly reported.
