What happened

The 11 October 2023 Powerball draw ended a 36-draw roll with a single winning ticket matching 22-24-40-52-64 and Powerball 10. Final sales pushed the advertised jackpot from an estimated $1.73 billion to $1.765 billion, the second-largest in Powerball history behind the $2.04 billion won in California in November 2022. The California Lottery announced on 15 March 2024 that the prize had been claimed by Theodorus Struyck, 65, of Frazier Park, acting as representative of a group of winners whose other members were not named. The ticket was sold at Midway Market & Liquor in Frazier Park, Kern County, a family-run store about 100 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. The shop received a $1 million retailer bonus; co-owner Nidal "Andy" Khalil said, "I did not believe it at first and then I started getting calls." California law requires the lottery to disclose both the winner's name and the selling retailer. Lottery director Harjinder K. Shergill Chima said the long roll raised an extra $119.5 million for California public schools.

Where they are now

(2026) Struyck has made no public statement since the March 2024 announcement. Realtor.com reported in March 2026 that the two-bedroom Frazier Park cabin he bought in 2010 for $90,000, about 500 yards from the store that sold the winning ticket, was gifted in December 2025 to the Triumph Foundation, a California not-for-profit supporting people with spinal cord injuries, and was listed for $250,000.

One detail worth keeping

He bought the second-largest winning ticket in Powerball history about 500 yards from his own front door, at a cabin he had paid $90,000 for in 2010.
