What happened

The Mega Millions drawing of Tuesday 8 August 2023 ended a run of 32 rollovers that had begun in April. One ticket, a Quick Pick sold at the Publix supermarket at 630 Atlantic Boulevard in Neptune Beach, Florida, matched 3-19-20-32-33 with Mega Ball 14. The jackpot was advertised at $1.58 billion and final ticket sales lifted it to $1.602 billion, the largest prize in Mega Millions history. The ticket was then held back for weeks. The prize was claimed in late September 2023, and under a Florida provision that shields a winner's identity for 90 days from the claim date, the Florida Lottery withheld the claimant's name until 27 December 2023. What it released was not a person: the winner of record was Saltines Holdings, LLC, of Miami, Florida - a limited liability company, not a trust. The company took the one-time cash option of $794,248,882 before tax, with 24 per cent withheld federally. Publix received a $100,000 retailer bonus for selling the ticket. Florida law makes a lottery winner's name, city, game and prize amount a public record, but because the claimant was a corporate entity, no individual was ever named.

Where they are now

As of 2026 the only claimant on the public record remains Saltines Holdings, LLC of Miami. No individual behind the company has been identified, and Florida reporting on later jackpots still cites the 2023 claim as the standard example of using an LLC to stay anonymous under Florida's disclosure rules.

One detail worth keeping

The biggest Mega Millions winner in history is a company: Saltines Holdings, LLC of Miami. The Publix that sold the $2 Quick Pick collected a $100,000 retailer bonus.
