Richard Lustig

Lustig played Florida Lottery games almost daily from his home in Orlando, hand-picking a set of numbers, researching them and replaying the same set rather than taking quick picks. His seven grand prizes came from scratch-off tickets, Florida Fantasy 5 and Florida Mega Money.

What happened

Richard Lustig, an Orlando entertainment booking agent, won seven Florida Lottery grand prizes between the early 1990s and 2010. ABC News reported in October 2010 that he had taken seven grand prizes totalling more than $1 million, starting with a $10,000 prize and including a $98,000 Fantasy 5 win. Published tallies of his record list his largest win as $842,152.91 from Florida Mega Money in January 2002 (only the month is documented), followed by Fantasy 5 prizes of $73,658.06 on 25 November 2008 and $98,992.92 on 9 August 2010, with the seven wins adding up to $1,052,205.58 before tax. Lustig said he never used quick picks: he researched a set of numbers, stuck with them, and reinvested part of each win in further tickets. He self-published a 40-page book, Learn How to Increase Your Chances of Winning the Lottery, which ABC News reported had reached No. 3 on Amazon's self-help list, and he was interviewed by ABC and CBS. Financial writers rejected his method, one calling it dangerous, and CNN Money removed a video of his tips in 2012 after criticism. Lustig died in Orlando on 22 July 2018, aged 67.

Where they are now

Deceased. CelebrityAccess reported in September 2018 that Lustig had died in Orlando, Florida, on 22 July 2018 at the age of 67. A Florida Today retrospective in 2023 still described him as likely the luckiest lottery winner in history.

One detail worth keeping

CNN Money pulled its video of Lustig's lottery tips in 2012 after a backlash from financial writers, who called his method statistically unsound.
