What happened

Ronnie Music Jr. of Waycross, Georgia, won $3 million on a Georgia Lottery instant scratch-off ticket in February 2015. Within months he began putting the proceeds into methamphetamine. In September 2015 co-conspirators were caught trying to sell about 11 pounds of crystal meth with a street value above $500,000, and Music was arrested in Tennessee later that year after selling meth to a confidential informant. Investigators seized more than $1 million worth of crystal meth, over $600,000 in cash, multiple vehicles, a large cache of firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition. He pleaded guilty in July 2016 to conspiring to distribute methamphetamine and to possessing firearms as a convicted felon, and faced up to life in prison. US Attorney Ed Tarver said Music "decided to test his luck by sinking millions of dollars of lottery winnings into the purchase and sale of crystal meth." On 3 April 2017 Chief US District Judge Lisa Godbey Wood sentenced him, then 46, to 21 years in federal prison.

Where they are now

(2017) Music was sentenced on 3 April 2017 to 21 years in federal prison, a term the AJC reported was about six years below the guideline range after he gave investigators information used against Calhoun State Prison inmate Daniel Alo. Prosecutors charged 21 others in the ring; including Music, 20 had been convicted by the time of his sentencing. No later change to his status has been publicly reported.

One detail worth keeping

Prosecutors said the ring used drones to drop mobile phones into a Georgia prison yard so inmates could direct drug deals from inside.
