Took the money, kept their life, said little since.
Three tickets shared the Powerball jackpot drawn on Wednesday 13 January 2016, advertised at $1.586 billion and at the time the largest lottery prize in the world. One was bought at a Publix supermarket in Melbourne Beach, Florida, by Maureen Smith, 70, a self-described homemaker, and her husband David Kaltschmidt, 55, a manufacturing engineer who had spent 34 years at Northrop Grumman. Both were originally from Long Island and had lived in Melbourne Beach since 1991. They did not use a Quick Pick: Smith said the winning line, 4, 8, 19, 27 and 34 with Powerball 10, was a set of numbers she had played for years, although she bought tickets only rarely. They discovered the win the morning after the draw and kept it from their own family until the week before going public. Kaltschmidt said: "I lost 10 pounds. There was a lot of pacing at night." On 17 February 2016, at Florida Lottery headquarters in Tallahassee, they claimed through a vehicle called The Nickel 95 Trust and took the one-time cash option of $327,835,077 before tax. Their share of the jackpot was $528.8 million. Kaltschmidt said he would retire and replace his ageing truck; Smith said she wanted a massage and to "help the special people in my life".
In December 2024, nearly nine years after the win, Orlando station WKMG reported the couple were still living in the Sunnyland Beach area near Melbourne Beach and had kept a modest profile. A 95-year-old neighbour said they "never flaunted that they were now millionaires and move away. No, they stayed right here in Sunnyland Beach area."
One detail worth keeping
They claimed as "The Nickel 95 Trust" and refused to explain the name - and had kept the win secret even from their own family until the week they went public.
