What happened

Powerball draw 1183 on Thursday 17 January 2019 was advertised at A$100 million, but heavy ticket sales pushed the division one prize to A$107,575,649.08, and a single entry took the lot. The winner was a healthcare professional in her 40s from inner-city Sydney, a regular player who had bought a 12-game marked entry online at thelott.com. When The Lott called, she assumed the figure was A$107,000 and asked whether the call was a trick. Told the real amount, she said: "Wait - are you telling me I've won $107 million?!" She declined to be named. The prize was the largest ever won by a single Australian lottery entry at that point, beating the A$70 million taken by Hervey Bay grandparents in 2016. She said she would not retire, telling reporters she was "so passionate about my job", and that she planned to share the money with family, donate to a favourite charity and travel by caravan. Twenty division two entries in the same draw won A$94,792.90 each. She said she would celebrate with "a cheap glass of chardonnay" and turned up to work the next day.

Where they are now

In a June 2021 interview published by The Lott she said she and her husband were both still working, that they had bought a family home "for generations to come", and that they were donating to community causes. Her A$107.58 million remained the largest individual Australian lottery prize until May 2024, when a South Australian man won A$150 million.

One detail worth keeping

Told she had won A$107 million, she first thought it was A$107,000 - then said she would celebrate with "a cheap glass of chardonnay" and go to work the next day.
